Sharing Your Stories as an Entrepreneur

One of the trickiest aspects of marketing your business online is managing to NOT sound like everybody else. Sure, you've probably heard that in marketing copy, it's all about the "you." We address the customer directly our website content, asking, "What's the one thing YOU burn to know about (whatever)?"

But what happens when we ONLY talk to the reader about THEIR needs and THEIR questions and THEIR problems that need solving? We forget that they want to know a little bit about us, the small business owner, the mysterious person behind the magic curtain.

Being a web based entrepreneur is kind of an extra cool thing. It means you get unlimited space to tell your story. This gives you a chance to develop a special flavor and flair in your communication. You can even reinvent yourself along the way.

One goal should be to share your story in a relatable way. This gives people a chance to get to know you by way of your journey. The more they come to learn about you, the more they'll find you to be someone they can connect and identify with.

Sometimes, though, it can be tough to know which stories we should pull out, how much detail to include, and when is the right time to tell them.

Did you ever notice that many high-profile marketers are prone to spilling confessions? "Today, I'm a six-figure coach, but there was once a time when I didn't have two nickels to rub together."

How will you know if your confession will help you connect meaningfully? What if your confession repels, rather than attracts?

There's much to learn about the art of storytelling for entrepreneurs… but you are probably aware that the biggest thought leaders in your favorite niches are pretty effective at offering you glimpses into their humanity every now and then. We think, "Hey, that guy or gal is a lot like me! Maybe I can learn from this person." and we keep on following along.

So, if you intend to become a thought leader yourself, then one of the best things you can do for your business is master the art of storytelling as a way to develop your business persona.
