Web Copywriting: How to Make Short Articles from Long Ones

If you're a word nerd like I am, it might feel like a tall order to write shorter articles. The good news is, you don't have to attempt this cold. What you can do is write an in-depth article, then go back and see where you can "slice and dice" - breaking the original article into two, shorter, standalone articles.

Think of this process as "feeding the search engines" little bits and bites of information. You want them to make frequent visits to your website - so you "throw them a bone" - a single article every few days or so. Search engines prefer several small meals over the course of a week, as opposed to one large meal all at once, and then nothing at all for the next month.

The Process:

1. Pull out a "longish" article from your collection. The best ones to break up into pieces are 1,200 words or longer - but if you find a good 850-word article that can easily be divided in half, by all means split it up if you can.

2. Scan the article for spots where you can easily "break it in two." For example, if you wrote an article on how to refinish furniture, maybe you spent some time in the first portion of the article discussing the different types of wood furniture. Later, you went into the steps that you need to take to remove the old finish and then re-stain. This is a perfect article to just split right down the middle. Your first article can be about "types of wood furniture" and the second can be "Furniture Refinishing in 6 Simple Steps." If you feel that the two articles "belong together - that one leads to the other, you can always add a link to the bottom of the first one that encourages your website visitors to "read on for part 2 of this series."

3. Break them up. Go to the first article, and highlight all of the text that you'd like to move to the second. Type "Control-C" to copy that text. Now create a new document and paste in the text by typing "Control-V."

4. Check for proper flow. Go back to the first article and make sure that the introduction flows properly into the supporting text. If it doesn't, rewrite. Read the entire article from start to finish, checking for proper flow from one idea to the next. Be sure that the conclusion fits what you have written in the rest of the article.

5. Rinse, repeat. Return to the second article and repeat the process that you just used to "tune up" the first article.

6. Add clever titles to both articles. Proofread and spell check. Publish to your website!

For some articles, you might even find that you have three different "story lines" living on one web page. In that case, conquer and divide, as above, but create three articles intead of two.

The other thing to remember: article marketing is all about keyword linking to your articles, using the ONE phrase that you think visitors are typing into the search engines.

Suppose you're a hemp seed salesman. People who are hunting for "hemp seeds" will find you higher up on the search engine results if you have more keyword linked pages on your website than your competition does. (This is why the article directories want you to submit to them - the more pages you supply them with, the more prominent they become on Google, and the more traffic is directed their way.) You can do this for your own website once you exhaust your effort to get incoming links from article directory traffic.
