The Trick to Getting Your Newsletter Read and Bringing In New Business Each Month
One of the best ways to get people to come back and buy things from your website is to send out a monthly newsletter. Now, you might be thinking, well, lots of people email-market to me, and half the time I don't read what they send. So why would I think it would be any different if I mailed out a newsletter?
Trust me: it can be different, if you make it so. Here's the trick to getting your newsletter read each month: you want to keep the quality of the content extremely high. That means the following:
-
Throwing together some half-baked ideas won't cut it
-
A really short list of tips that they probably already know about won't cut it
-
Filling your newsletter with other people's spam won't cut it
-
Recycling old content won't cut it
I craft email newsletters for a select group of Wordfeeder clients, and here's what I aim to do with each issue:
1. Write with soul, immersing myself in the content and really feeling what it might be like to be on the receiving end of the information.
2. Offer readers something they never knew before, a trick that will help them save money or help the environment or get more business or whatever it is that they WANT to do.
3. Give them a no-BS email subjectline. I don't know about you, but I'm getting really weary of the old teaser line. Things like, "Dina, are you going?" Maybe I'm old-school but I just don't feel that danglers like this come across as professional, nor do they entice me to read the email.
4. Invent creative ways to package up my clients' services and present them so clients will sit up and say, "Hey, I could really use that... and I like the price, too!"
Here's a living example of a great company newsletter: my client, Diane Downey, otherwise known as The Yard Fairy. We just finished up her February newsletter and you can see for yourself how we put it together by clicking here.
Each month, Diane sends me valuable tidbits and how-tos about low-water landscaping, gardening, and whole host of other San Diego landscaping-related content. (For example, this month I helped her pull together a couple of articles on fruits and vegetables to plant in spring).
To save money (this is a great tip, so jot it down), Diane first has a high school or college intern gather the information and then compile it all into a rough draft of an article. Then, she utilizes my copy editing services to help her tighten up the writing, brand her business, spruce up headlines, and relate it all to whatever promotions she's currently running.
I then upload the new article to her site and add a gorgeous photo from her growing collection of landscaping images. This is another huge quality-enhancer; people love to look at pictures, and what better thing to take photos of than a beautifully designed landscape in lovely, southern California ?
If you have a business where image makes all the difference (or even if you don't but you're a fun group who does fun things)... I strongly advise you to keep that digital camera battery charged and start snapping pics of any and everything you're creating. Great people doing great things... it's really very exciting and brings so much personality to help your company stand out from the rest. Not to mention... adding fresh content to your website each month will definitely improve your search engine positioning.
Just the fact that my client Diane has a marketing plan in place and takes the time to send me superb content to work with really makes all the difference in how many new clients her newsletter brings in each month. You can do the same. And if budget is a concern? No worries. We can tailor the part of the service that you outsource according to how much you're comfortable spending each month.
For example, if you enjoy writing but aren't so great with technology, then send Wordfeeder your monthly article. We'll get to work developing a quick newsletter and then sending it out to your list using Aweber or Constant Contact.
Maybe you'd prefer to manage the bulk of the work but aren't confident in your writing. Let Wordfeeder touch up your newsletter and articles using simple editing and critical suggestions. This way, you can be sure your marketing is doing the job it's supposed to.
The type of work we can help you with is entirely up to you. And... having a great newsletter that converts readers into customers each month is within your grasp.
