Mopreme Being.
If talent is inherited, it shouldn’t
surprise anyone that Mopreme Shakur follows close behind his
late brother Tupac’s path to mega-stardom. In June of
2004, Thug Life and Outlawz member Mopreme signed on with
Moblife Records. Since then he’s been laying the tracks
of his personal legacy with footing as swift and sure as that
of the Inca tribesmen from whence he descends.
Born in South Jamaica, Queens, Mopreme was
raised by Black Panther activists Dr. Mutulu Shakur and his
wife Atheni Shakur, who is Mopreme’s stepmother. His
talent began to manifest itself in early childhood, where
he could be found rapping on the streets of Queens with his
brother. Still in his youth, Mopreme endured a brief separation
from Tupac when the family was split due to an FBI expose
that forced his father into hiding. Despite his brother’s
absence, Mopreme continued to hone his gifts of rhythm, rhyme
and rhetoric. This inborn talent plus the knowledge-is-power
parenting philosophy of his historically-influential mother
and father, would seal his fate in becoming the rap legend
and urban prophet he is today.
In his adult years, Mopreme served in the
military for a time before moving to Oakland, CA in 1990 where
he hooked up with Tony! Toni! Tone! His original claim to
fame is the trademark line “Tony! Toni! Tone! has done
it again” as it’s heard in the then-popular hit
“Feels Good” off their album The Revival. At that
time Mopreme was operating under the alias “Mocedes.”
Mopreme was an original member of the group
Thug Life, the “code of conduct” for which was
developed in part by his father Mutulu, who is Mopreme’s
greatest influence and inspiration. Thug Life consisted of
Tupac, Mopreme, Big Syke, Macadoshis and The Rated R. Their
first album, Thug Life Volume 1, was released in 1994 and
reached Billboard Gold in a matter of weeks, eventually going
Platinum. Mopreme was featured in 6 out of 10 of the songs
including “Bury Me a G” and “Cradle to the
Grave.”
Next on Mopreme’s rap resume comes
the multi-platinum All Eyez On Me project, which showcased
Mopreme’s skills on “When We Ride”; followed
by Outlawz Immortalz, which included Tupac (Makavelli), Big
Syke (Mussolini), Yaki (Kadafi), Fatal (Hussein), Katari (Kastro),
Edi, Napoleon, and Mopreme as Komeni. Mopreme contined to
perform with his brother until Tupac’s death in 1996,
after which he went into an extended period of mourning.
Mopreme reemerged on the rap front in 2000
to kick off the Thug Law project with Big Syke. He has appeared
in two DVDs chronicling his brother’s life and is currently
working on his first solo album which will release sometime
this year. Stay tuned to www.mobliferecords.com for future
updates on Mopreme who continues to blaze a trail as one of
the most gifted and influential rappers of our time.
